Def Leppard Bio & Fun Facts

The band was originally formed in England in 1977 under the name Atomic Mass, which was changed to Def Leppard in 1978. Members included Joe Elliott, Tony Kenning, Rick Savage and Pete Willis, although there would be numerous changes to the band members over the years.  Currently, the band consists of Joe Elliot on vocals, Phil Collen and Vivian Campbell on guitar, Rick Savage on bass and Rick Allen on drums.

Def Leppard rose to fame in the early 80s, beginning with their debut album “On Through the Night.” Their sound was distinctly hard rock and heavy metal but appealed to pop audiences with catchy hooks and melodies.

In 1984, drummer Rick Allen was involved in a car accident that resulted in him losing his left arm, but he didn’t let that slow him down! He continued on as their drummer, learning to compensate by using his legs.

“Hysteria,” the fourth album to be released by Def Leppard, really cemented the band in historic musical stardom with the colossal hits “Pour Some Sugar on Me” and “Love Bites.” To this day, the album is one of only a few to ever have 7 or more singles chart on the US Hot 100.

Over 4 decades, Def Leppard has produced 7 studio albums and 19 Billboard Top 100 hits. Over time, the most popular Def Leppard songs include “Photograph,” “Pour Some Sugar On Me,” “Animal,” “Rock of Ages, “Bringin’ on the Heartbreak,” “Foolin’,” “Hysteria,” “Promises,” “Love Bites,” and “Rocket.”

Def Leppard was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019 and won the Klipsch Audio Fan Vote.

Def Leppard concerts are definitely a must-see! Those who grew up in the 80s can reminisce with the music of their youth. Those from younger generations can experience for themselves what classic 80s hard rock is all about. I’m not f-f-f-foolin’!
